HISTORY OF LAUGHING YOGA
Laughter Yoga was started in India in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. He was researching information for an article he was writing for a health journal entitled "Laughter - The Best Medicine". He discovered many scientific studies that described the proven benefits of laughter on the human mind and body. Dr. Kataria decided to test the effects of laughter on himself and others. On March 13, 1995, in a park in India, he started what would become the first Laughter Club with only five people. Within a few days the group grew to 50 participants. Today there 1,000's of Laughter Clubs worldwide.
Laughter Yoga is based on the principle that our body cannot tell the difference between fake and real laughter. Both types of laughter produce what can be called a "happy chemistry". Laughter Club members are encouraged to act out laughter through various exercises and very soon the laughter becomes contagious. The hearty laughter that results creates a childlike playfulness and joyfulness!
